Biografia

La Russian National Orchestra è stata fondata nel 1990 dal pianista e direttore Mikhail Pletnev ed attualmente è richiestissima in tutto il mondo. L’Evening Standard ha commentato così il suo debutto ai BBC Proms di Londra nel 1996: “Ha suonato con tale accattivante bellezza che il pubblico ne è rimasto estasiato”. Nel 2004 l’orchestra è stata descritta come “un simbolo vivente di quello che c’è di meglio nell’arte russa” (Miami Herald) e “quanto di più vicino alla perfezione si possa immaginare” (Trinity Mirror).

La RNO è ospite regolare delle capitali europee, asiatiche ed americane e dei festival internazionali più prestigiosi tra cui Edimburgo, Shanghai ed i BBC Proms. La RNO è orchestra co-fondatrice del Festival del Sole, che si tiene ogni luglio nella Napa Valley, in California. I suoi concerti vengono regolarmente trasmessi dalle radio pubbliche nazionali di Stati Uniti ed Europa e dal canale Kultura in Russia.

L'Orchestra promuove il RNO Grand Festival, che si tiene ogni anno dal 2009 a settembre a Mosca; vanta una grande popolarità tra il pubblico radiofonico di tutto il mondo e i suoi concerti vengono regolarmente trasmessi dalla National Public Radio negli Stati Uniti e dalla European Broadcasting Union.
La rivista Gramophone ha definito il primo CD della RNO (1991) “un’esperienza che ispira soggezione; è possibile che degli esseri umani possano suonare così?”, definendola come la migliore registrazione della Patetica di Tchaikovsky. Da allora l’Orchestra ha inciso più di ottanta dischi principalmente per le etichette discografiche Deutsche Grammophon e PentaTone Classics, collaborando con direttori che includono il suo fondatore e Direttore Artistico Mikhail Pletnev, Vladimir Jurowski, Kent Nagano, Carlo Ponti, Mstislav Rostropovich e Vasily Petrenko.

Pubblicazioni di grande successo includono l'integrale delle Sinfonie e Concerti per pianoforte di Beethoven per Deutsche Grammophon e le Sei Sinfonie di Chaikovskij per PentaTone. Il progetto Shostakovich, inciso sempre per PentaTone, è stato definito "il ciclo più entusiasmante e senza dubbio il migliore registrato" (SACD.net).
Le registrazioni a scopo di beneficenza di Pierino e il Lupo di Prokofiev e di Wolf Tracks di Beintus, diretti da Kent Nagano e con le voci narranti di Sophia Loren, Bill Clinton e Mikhail Gorbachev hanno ricevuto un Grammy® Award nel 2004, rendendo la RNO la prima orchestra russa di sempre ad aver ricevuto tale onoreficenza. Sono state pubblicate anche versioni in spagnolo (con la voce di Antonio Banderas), russo (Oleg Tabakov e Sergei Bezrukov) e mandarino (Xiao Lu e Geng Chun).

La Russian National Orchestra è un’istituzione privata che si avvale del contributo di singoli, fondazioni o corporazioni russe o straniere. A riconoscimento della sua arte e della sua struttura rivoluzionaria, è stata la prima orchestra non governativa a ricevere importanti aiuti dalla Federazione Russa.
